Stanisław Wyspiański’s influential 1901 play details a marriage ceremony between a poet and peasant. The wedding party is attended by a cross-section of society. However, the veneer of harmony is broken when ghosts – drawn from local history and legend – appear to the revellers. Wajda’s adaptation employs dizzying cinematography and creates an eerie atmosphere as he presents a searing critique of the nation. It became one of the most culturally significant works of Polish cinema.
