An opulently strange and hallucinatory masterpiece that filters Bruno Schulz’s elusive and elliptical novella (with other Schulz stories stirred into the mix) through Has’s own familiar obsessions. Like most Has protagonists, Józef (Jan Nowicki) is trying to access the past, in this case by visiting his father (Marek Kondrat) in a sanatorium that turns out to be a portal to a world based as much on Józef’s fears and long-suppressed memories as it is on objective reality. Stylistically, the film recalls Orson Welles at his most florid, with Jerzy Maksymiuk’s atonal score brilliantly integrated into the overall texture.
Followed by a concert at 20.40pm at ICA
Sanatorium Under the Hourglass musical interpretation by Bester Quartet.
The phenomenal arrangements of “Zorn” themes, enclosed in the cycle dedicated to the memory of Bruno Schulz, ideally complement the mysterious world of sensual, literary fantasies of the brilliant creator from Drohobych. This musical homage is filled with sound visions suspended on the border between dream and reality, unmistakably referring to great prose. "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass" is a captivatingly beautiful, magical journey in which Schulz's world never ceases to amaze and fascinate. Bester Quartet is a new edition of the legendary The Cracow Klezmer Band that was formed in 1997 in Krakow, Poland as an initiative of Jaroslaw Bester – composer and accordionist.
