The iconic Polish film Passenger (Pasażerka) has been described as “one of the most audacious fictions ever made about the Holocaust”.
Based on Auschwitz survivor Zofia Posmysz’s 1962 novel (which also inspired Mieczysław Weinberg’s 1968 opera), Passenger was a labour of love for its director Andrzej Munk who tragically died in a car crash before completing it. His colleagues, convinced this film was a masterwork, pieced together his vision using the material he had already shot, still photographs and voice-over.
Finally released in 1964, Passenger was garlanded with awards at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals.
