documentary

With an introduction by documentary filmmaker Marc Isaacs.

This special event honors the legacy of Marcel Łoziński, one of the most influential voices in world documentary cinema who passed away last year. A master of ethical provocation and humanist observation, Łoziński reshaped the language of non-fiction film by questioning the boundaries between truth, manipulation, and authorship. His work—rooted in deep empathy and rigorous self-reflection—continues to inspire generations of filmmakers to look more closely, listen more carefully, and take responsibility for the act of filming itself.

The Visit, Poland, 1974, 15 mins

A "Polityka" weekly journalist Marta Wesolowska and photo-reporter Erazm Ciolek visit Urszula Flis, who runs a country farm. A young woman living on her own, Flis is an untypical villager in that she is interested in culture and corresponds with writers.

Workshops Exercises, Poland, 1986, 12 mins

An apparently innocuous street survey about the youth of the time reveals the manipulative capabilities at television’s disposal. Through selective editing and interference with the sound, the original image and meaning of the statements can be completely altered

89 mm From Europe, Poland, 1993, 12 mins

A deceptively simple observation at a border crossing becomes a poignant portrait of Europe’s invisible divisions. Focusing on a technical detail—the difference in railway gauge—Łoziński reveals how politics, history, and everyday labor intersect in quiet, human moments.

Anything Can Happen, Poland, 1995, 40 mins

In a park, a young boy (Lozinski’s son) engages elderly strangers in candid conversations about life, love, and death. Tender, humorous, and deeply moving, the film captures the openness of childhood meeting the wisdom and vulnerability of old age.
