A young man, Kazik (Władysław Kowalski) finds a job on a construction site in the mining town of Turów (“the end of the world”), far removed from the opulent settings of most of Has’s other films. Although Kazik tries to fit in with his colleagues, particularly the engineer Piotr (Krzysztof Chamiec), they sense that he’s hiding something that compelled him to leave his home town in the first place – an impression exacerbated when a mysterious man comes looking for him. Like all Has protagonists, Kazik is a dreamer, the film’s title referring to a fantasy about the Turów mine striking gold.
